da bet nacional: West Ham should make an audacious swoop for Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella, who has previously been lauded by Italian footballing legends such as Andrea Pirlo and Alessandro del Piero who can’t seem to get enough of him.
What’s the word, then?
Barella appears to have it all. A traditional Italian centre midfielder, the 21-year-old can score goals, make them and keep possession for his side – he managed six goals from midfield last year, and has just one this season in the form of a magical freekick against Atlanta.
The youngster can dribble with the ball effectively as well as battle to win it back just as efficiently. Against AC Milan this season, Barella recovered possession 13 times, showcasing just how much of an irritant he is to the opposition whilst being a gem for his own teammates to have within their ranks.
Typical Italian midfielders can read the game four or five steps ahead of everyone else, and have the technique to make good on that foresight, and the Cagliari star has this trait nailed down – he plays with maturity and composure beyond his years.
Why would West Ham want him?
The Hammers have their own midfield prodigy already within their roster in Declan Rice, but alongside him in the middle is 31-year-old Mark Noble, a player who is surely nearing his expiry date with his boyhood club.
Rice, at 19-years-old, looks likely to be a mainstay in the side at the London Stadium for many years to come, and if the Irons somehow added Barella alongside him, their midfield would be a fearsome one for the next decade at least.
This is Barella’s fourth season with the Italian side, and whilst he is said to be loving life, as seen in an article by the BBC, a player of his huge ability may want to test himself out in one of the best leagues in the world soon.
